ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for assisting with the editorial content and development of Farm Bureau’s publications and websites. This consists of writing/editing/photography assignments from the Publications Editor and Web development and content assignments from the Director.

GEORGIA FARM BUREAU PUBLICATIONS:

MEDIA RELATIONS:

NEWS GATHERING:

Daily reading of newspapers, ag web sites, wire service copy, American Farm Bureau, USDA, other ag organizations and government officials’ information and news releases is required. PUBLIC RELATIONS:

WEB:
Assist in writing content, re-purposing existing content and posting photos, video and other material daily on GFB websites. Insure that content is always current. Manually update websites using web development software when required. Act as contact person for GFB staff, departments and companies for routine website updates and changes. Qualifications, Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Communications, Communications or Journalism, with emphasis in print/writing preferred. Preferred candidate will have reporting experience (minimum 1-2 years). Preferably will have previous experience with website creation software - HTML, XHTML, CSS. Must be willing to train in website development. Knowledge of agriculture and Farm Bureau a definite plus. Language Skills: Must be proficient in proper English. PROGRAMMER/WEB DEVELOPER

The successful candidate will:
- Maintain close working relationships with staff from seven newspapers in the planning and execution of the newspapers's Web sites, including content and design for news, advertising and marketing.
- Serve as liaison between the newspapers and their Web site provider, key vendors and suppliers as appropriate.
- Maintain the corporate Web site.
Programming
Experience with VTL (Velocity Template Language) is helpful. Since VTL directives include functions common to many programming and scripting languages, the applicant must demonstrate an ability in typical scripting languages like JavaScript, ASP or PHP.
Web Development
The applicant should present several fully developed websites; if they are template-generated, the applicant should demonstrate an ability to customize various layout and style options. Knowledge beyond "WYSIWYG" HTML editors is a firm requirement; i.e., the applicant should be a proficient "notepad" developer. The applicant should also be well-versed in JavaScript for purposes of adding dynamic effects, forms validation, etc., and should be able to work with the DOM. Knowledge of AJAX is preferred. Applicants will be favored who understand:
- XHTML standards compliance
- CSS in presentation techniques
- Designing for accessibility
- Cross-browser and cross-device design
XML/RSS
The applicant should be familiar with the RSS 2.0 standard and show an ability to use XSL to translate an XML document into HTML for browser display.
Content Management Systems
Previous experience in the design aspects of content management systems is helpful. An applicant should indicate any experience with Joomla, Drupal, XOOPS or similar content management systems.

About the classifieds
The GPA Classifieds are a service of the Georgia Press Association. There is no charge for ads if the position is being filled for a newspaper or company that is itself an individual member of GPA. For all others (including affiliates, subsidiaries and sister publications of GPA members), the cost is $20 per ad. Advertisements are left in the GPA Classifieds for three months from the "Posted" date unless we are otherwise notified.
In addition, ads will be published one time in the classified section of the GPA Bulletin (a monthly newsletter with approx.1,000 circulation). The Bulletin is mailed on or about the 17th, and the deadline for classifieds submissions is the 5th.
To post an advertisement in the GPA Classifieds, send your request to mail@gapress.org. If you are a non-GPA member you must send us a check or money order before we can post your ad. The Georgia Press Association also maintains a free Resume File. Job seekers may send their resumes to Resume File, GPA, 3066 Mercer University Drive, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30341. All resumes will remain on file for three months. GPA members may call the office at any time to inquire about resumes on file. We will help you look for the kind of candidate you need and fax you the resumes.
